Discipleship Path Assessment
Jesus never intended to leave us the way he found us. Remember when he said, "Follow me and I will make you fishers of people"? It's one of many examples of when he talked about changing who we are. Right in the middle of that famous quote are the words "I will make you" - meaning, I will make you into something that you currently are not. I will change you. He doesn't intend for us to stay the same, because the way we were before knowing him is what led us to this whole mess of sin and need for salvation. That can't continue.
Jesus didn't come to make converts. He came to make disciples.
A disciple doesn't just get rescued from sin and hell. A disciple learns to live an entirely new way of life by following the path Jesus laid out for us. Listen to how Colossians 2 puts it: "Now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness" (6-7).
If your spiritual path started with asking for salvation and accepting Jesus, and ended there without any further progress, then you're an adult who's still wearing spiritual diapers, sitting in your own mess, still drinking milk from a spiritual bottle, still crawling when you should be walking, running, and jumping. This is not what Jesus had in mind when he came to save you and me. God said, "You must continue... Just as you accepted Jesus, you must continue... grow... let your life be built on him."
The Discipleship Path
I've made a short way for us to remember steps for spiritual growth. It's called a Discipleship Path. It's not the only way to grow. But it's a way we can rally together and help each other along. Watch this video for an introduction...
